Sign Language and Deaf Studies
Duration: 3 semesters
Program Description
The Sign Language and Deaf Studies program will enable students to develop proficiency in the use of American Sign Language. Students will also explore Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, Deaf Education and Deaf Advocacy. Students will gain a better grasp of ASL grammar through course work, lectures, videotaped resources and public speaking in sign language. Students will also examine the role of ethics in today's society working interculturally.
In addition to full-time classes, students are required to spend a number of hours attending deaf community events. These may include conferences, working retreats, sports events, meetings, informal gatherings, etc., to further their study of the language and culture. Students are required to conform to personal appearance standards while on field experiences.

Employment Opportunities
Upon successful completion of the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program, graduates will be qualified to work in a variety of positions where entry-level ASL fluency is required. Employees who are fluent in ASL can facilitate access in diverse settings for Canadians who are Deaf. One may wish to complete this program in conjunction with another program in the community services field (i.e. Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Therapeutic Recreation, etc.).
Graduates may wish to continue their training at Academy Canada and study to become an American Sign Language/English Interpreter. Successful completion of the Sign Language and Deaf Studies program would be an asset when applying for admissions to Academy Canada’s Professional Interpreting (American Sign Language/English) program. Entrance Requirements
High School Graduates or Equivalent
High School Graduates or equivalent are eligible for admission to the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program. Students must complete an application form and provide a copy of High School, Adult Basic Education or G.E.D. results. Under certain circumstances students who do not complete the formal High School requirements may be accepted upon the recommendation of a High School Principal or Guidance Counsellor. Mature Students
Mature students are eligible for admission to the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program. These students must be at least 19 years of age, complete an application form, provide a copy of recent marks and write a Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT) as arranged by Academy Canada.
