Baker

Duration:  35 weeks plus 2 week work term

 

Program Description

The Baker program is designed to provide practical training with supporting theory to enable the students to find and maintain employment as an entry level Baker or Baker's Helper in small bakeries, hotels, restaurants or other such establishments. The Baker program also familiarizes students with the opportunities and working conditions in the baking industry.  Students enrolled in the Baker program will gain valuable hands-on training throughout their program and will be ready for immediate entry into the work force upon graduation. The program consists of lectures and demonstrations combined with practical experience in an operational kitchen.

Upon completion of the Baker program, students can continue their training for an additional 24 weeks and graduate with both a Diploma of Vocation Education in Baker and Cook.

The Baker trade designated as an Interprovincial Red Seal Program and in-class training hours can be used as credit towards Red Seal Certification.

Employment Opportunities
Graduates from the Baker program may be employed in a variety of positions as Bakers or Baker's Helper in areas including hotel and motel, restaurants, fast food establishments, bed and breakfast facilities as well as being able to set up their own business in catering of special events.

Entrance Requirements
High School Graduates or Equivalent
High School Graduates or equivalent are eligible for admission into the Baker program. Students must complete an application form and provide a copy of High School, Adult Basic Education, or G.E.D. results. Under certain circumstances students who do not complete the formal High School requirements may be accepted upon the recommendation of a High School Principal or Guidance Counselor. The director of institutional and industrial education may also approve students. Please contact an Admissions Officer for further details.

Mature Students
Mature Students are eligible for admission into the Baker program. These students must be 19 years of age or older, complete an application form, provide a copy of most recent marks, and write a Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT) as arranged by Academy Canada.
