Better Business Bureau

Academy Canada is proud to work with the Newfoundland and Labrador Better Business Bureau to ensure we provide the best possible support and educational environment for our students, funding agencies, and community partners. We are strong believers in the BBB's and adhere to their high standards.

In June 2009, Community Relations Director, James Loder, agreed to sit as a Board of Directors member.

About the Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau, also known as BBB, is an unbiased organization that sets and upholds high standards for fair and honest business behaviour. Businesses that earn BBB "Accredited Business Status" contractually agree and adhere to the organization’s high ethical business behaviour standards.

The BBB provides objective advice, free business Reliability Reports and charity Wise Giving Reports, and educational information on topics affecting marketplace trust. To further promote trust, BBB also offers complaint and dispute resolution support for consumers and businesses when difference in viewpoints exist.

Their first BBB was founded in 1912. Today, 128 BBBs serve communities across the U.S. and Canada, evaluating and monitoring more than 3 million local, national, and multi-national businesses, and also charities.

The Council of Better Business Bureaus, also known as the CBBB, is a national umbrella organization for the North American Better Business Bureau system. Like the BBB system, CBBB is dedicated to fostering honest and responsive relationships between businesses and consumers, instilling consumer confidence and contributing to a trustworthy marketplace.

Established in June 1966, the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus (CCBBB) is the coordinating and licensing body of the Canadian BBB system. The BBB is a private sector funded non-profit organization with offices serving communities and marketplaces across Canada.

The Better Business Bureau's mission is to be the marketplace trust leader.

They accomplish their mission by:

  • Creating a community of trustworthy businesses
  • Setting marketplace trust standards
  • Encouraging and supporting best practices
  • Celebrating marketplace role models, and;
  • Denouncing substandard marketplace behaviour

BBB sees trust as a function of two primary factors – integrity and performance. Integrity includes respect, ethics, and intent. Performance speaks to a business’ track record of delivering results in accordance with BBB standards and/or addressing customer concerns in a timely, satisfactory manner.

BBB ensures that their high standards for trust are set and maintained. It exists so consumers and businesses alike have an unbiased source to guide them on trust matters. They provide free educational information and expert advice that is easily accessible.

BBB Accreditation is an honour; therefore, not every company is eligible. Businesses that meet our high standards are invited to join BBB. Businesses meeting BBB standards are presented to local Boards of Directors (or designees) for review and acceptance as a BBB Accredited Business. To read more about Accreditation Standards, click here.

All BBB accredited businesses must adhere to their Standards for Trust. The Standards for Trust are a comprehensive set of policies, procedures, and best practices focused on how businesses should treat the public fairly and honestly no matter the circumstances. To review its Standards for Trust, click here.

BBB does not compare businesses against each other, but rather evaluates businesses against its standards – and its standards clearly speak to a company's character and competence.

BBB is a resource for objective, unbiased business information. The national and local BBB operations network allows it to monitor and take action on thousands of business issues affecting consumers at any time.

Academy Canada and Eastern Education Foundation Partner to Help Local School Buy New Multimedia Equipment

Representatives from Academy Canada and the Eastern Education Foundation recently visited Mary Queen of Peace school in St. John’s to present them with a $1000 cheque to assist in the purchase of a new computer and scanner for their multimedia lab.

The award was made as part of the Eastern Education Foundation’s grant program, an excellent initiative designed to recognize outstanding projects local elementary, junior high and high school submitted. Mary Queen of Peace students under Bruce Lane's direction won their prize in recognition of their successful “Photo Album” initiative.

About the Mary Queen of Peace "Photo Album" Project:

In 1998-1999, Mary Queen of Peace started their International Photography Gallery. Since that time, approximately 5000 photos have been displayed in that gallery. When photographers submit photos to the gallery, they also give permission to the students to use their photographs in school projects.

In the Fall of 2006, six Grade 3 students were trained to add French and English keywords for each photo, enabling students and teachers to quickly find photos they can use in their projects.

Most photographers have extended their permission to include students anywhere in the world! As a result, we invite students and teachers worldwide to use our Mary Queen of Peace photo album as an educational resource. We ask that you email the school to let us know that you are using the photos and, if possible, send us any links to pages on which the photos have been used. Users must give credit to the photographer.

If you would like to submit photos to this gallery please forward to brucelane@esdnl.ca and I will have students add them to our project.
