About the Province

Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's most easterly province. We are located in the northeast corner of North America. The province has a population of approximately 510,000 with the majority of whom reside on the island portion of the province. Labrador is the mainland portion of the province bordering on the province of Quebec.

Our province offers an excellent quality of life, including one of North America's lowest crime rates, affordable housing, moderate climate, natural scenic landscape, and our unique friendly culture. With our warm summers and moderate winters, outdoor activities are plentiful for recreation golfing, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, fishing, whale and bird watching, sports and entertainment events. In 2002, the city of St. John's, located on the southeast part of the island, hosted the Juno Award Show for Canadian Artists.

Our Educational system is second to none! Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to building partnerships with nations and cultures around the world to increase the number of international students in our classrooms to enhance the educational experience of all students. Our province welcomes a continuing increase of foreign students as we build stronger cultural and economic links around the globe.

Climate

Since Newfoundland and Labrador is Atlantic Canada's largest province, we have an array of climates with moderating oceanic effects from the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of St. Lawrence, and Labrador Sea, from Humid Continental climate throughout most of Newfoundland to Subarctic and Subpolar climates from Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula and Labrador respectfully.

Culture

The people of Newfoundland and Labrador are among the world's friendliest people. We have roots worldwide with diverse cultural backgrounds. Our heritage extends deep from Northern Europe including England, Ireland, France, Scotland, and Scandinavia. In Labrador, our indigenous people still practice their rituals passed down from generation to generation. The island of Newfoundland was inhabited by several groups past and present, including the Mi'kmaq who contribute to our unique cultures, and to fuse them together as our own. This diverse background allows the people of our province to have a great sense of humour, strong work ethic, adaptability, change, and a friendly demeanour to embrace all.
