Dealing with the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC)

As a student loan borrower, maintaining close contact with the NSLSC is important in managing your loans and being aware of the circumstances of your student loan debt. However, there may be times when you face difficulties in dealing with the NSLSC. Follow the advice below for a better experience when dealing with the NSLSC during both your study period and during the repayment of your student loans. Contact your campus Business Office with any questions or concerns at 1-800-561-8000.

  • Educate yourself on your student loans by calling the NSLSC during your program as well as before and after graduating. Know your repayment start date, you repayment schedule, your total loan amount and your interest rates and monthly repayment amount.
  • Protect yourself by documenting and safely filing all conversations and correspondence relating to your student loans. Use your folder from Student Aid to keep all forms and documents filed safely in one place.
  • When taking notes, keep track of dates, names and discussions. For example, keep notes like the ones below:
    • January 15, 2011. Spoke with Kelly at NSLSC. Wrong program end date on file. Need to get Schedule II form from Business Office.
    • May 8, 2011. Spoke with Richard at NSLSC. Determined total loan amount, repayment start date, monthly repayment amount. Prepared for graduation next month. Will discuss repayment assistance options with Mitch in Business Office.
    • June 19, 2011. Called NSLSC, spoke with Carla. Prepared to begin repayment after grace period ends on January 30. Carla will send information and forms and I will apply for the Repayment Assistance Plan.
  • If you have difficulty understanding the person you have reached at the NSLSC due to a language barrier, thank the person and politely end the conversation and call again — you will likely reach someone else.
  • If you feel that the person you have reached at the NSLSC is unsure of the answers he/she is giving you and that you are being misinformed, politely end the conversation and all again – you will likely reach someone else.
  • The NSLSC manages and administers the loans of millions of students. This means that letters or phone calls that you should receive may not reach you on time or may not reach you at all.
