About the Province

Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's most easterly province. We are located in the northeast corner of North America. The province has a population of approximately 550,000 with the majority of whom reside on the island portion of the province. Labrador is the mainland portion of the province bordering on the province of Quebec.

Our province offers an excellent quality of life, including one of the lowest crime rates in North America, clean air, affordable housing, a moderate climate, natural scenic landscape and a unique, friendly culture. With our warm summers and moderate winters, outdoor activities are plentiful for recreation golfing, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, fishing, whale and bird watching, sports and entertainment events. In 2002, the city of St. John's, located on the southeast part of the island, hosted the Juno Award Show for Canadian Artists.

Our Educational system is second to none! Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to building partnerships with nations and cultures around the world to increase the number of international students in our classrooms to enhance the educational experience of all students. Our province welcomes a continuing increase of foreign students as we build stronger cultural and economic links around the globe.

Climate
Newfoundland and Labradors climate is maritime with few extremes of temperature and precipitation. The average temperature for mid July is 20 degrees Celsius and for February it is -1 degree Celsius. We have four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. The natives of this province often joke that we are the only province that can experience all seasons in one day! We are blessed to experience all types of weather and to enjoy such a beautiful countryside because of our diversity.

Culture
The people of Newfoundland and Labrador are among the most friendly people in the world. We have roots from all around the world with a diverse cultural background. Our heritage extends deep into the heart of England and France as well as settlers from Finland. In Labrador our indigenous people, still practice all the rituals passed down from generation to generation. The island of Newfoundland was inhabited by several groups such as the Micmac and the Mi'kmaq, whom all contribute to our unique flexibility to adapt, recognize and accept all types of culture and to fuse them all together to form our own. It is this diverse background that allows the natives of this province to have a great sense of humor, a strong work ethic, adaptability to change and a friendly demeanor to embrace all.
