Learn for the Real World
Programs and Courses

At Academy Canada, we offer a range of educational paths for our potential students. As you pursue higher learning, Academy Canada will offer you a wide range of educational paths to choose from.

Distance Education / E-learning
Students from around the globe can now study while remaining in their home. Students can access courses any time of day, seven days a week. When work or location prevents you from attending Academy Canada, we bring Academy Canada courses to you.

With Academy Canada's distance education / e-learning program, students can choose to complete a single course at a time or register for several courses simultaneously and work toward a Post Graduate Diploma or a Post Graduate Certificate. Distance Education can provide even the busiest person an opportunity to enhance his/her skills while maintaining a career or other educational obligations.

Current Campus Programs
International students are also welcome to study on campus for any of the current programs offered traditionally at Academy Canada's Campuses.

3+1 program (TFSU Students)
Academy Canada (AC) has been active in China since 1994. Activities have included joint venture relationships in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, and in Haikou, Hainan province. Currently AC is developing a strong academic partnership with the Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU), in Tianjin Municipality.

TFSU is one of the major foreign studies universities in China. It has a student enrolment of over 3000, more than half of which are in the English Department. One of the main programs in the English Department is a four-year BA degree (English major). AC and TFSU have cooperated to develop a 2+3+1 program where the third year of study is conducted at the St. John's Newfoundland campus of AC. The course of study is attached as Annex A.

Students will complete their third year of program studies at AC and will receive a certificate of completion for each course completed. Students will return to Tianjin for their final year of study before they receive their BA degree.

This is an innovative program, which recognizes the importance of exposure to an English speaking social and cultural environment to ensure a fuller understanding of the English language, customs and more. This is seen as important by both TFSU and the students, particularly as China prepares to host the Olympic Games in 2008 (Tianjin will host training facilities and also some events) and also enter the WTO.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
Academy Canada’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program was created to provide international students with the verbal and written strategies needed to navigate effectively through real-life English. The ESL program was designed to enhance English skills through social and educational experiences. Students will acquire a vocabulary necessary for success in future endeavors.

Students develop the ability to speak and write the language necessary for living and learning in an English environment. It is Academy Canada’s aim to ensure that students develop the level of proficiency in English needed for success in both education and the workplace.

ESL Program Overview
As part of the entrance requirements, the student will undergo an assessment by Academy Canada personnel.  The student’s educational background and goals will be taken into consideration. The results of this assessment will assist Academy Canada’s staff in placing each student in the proper level of English study. Each level of training in ESL will consist of oral and written English instruction and comprehension of vocabulary, literature and basic math skills. Core vocabulary will be presented, practiced and applied throughout the duration of the program. Realistic task-based exercises will provide students with a firm foundation for communicating in an English environment. The number of months necessary to attain English proficiency will depend on the English level of the student and the student’s career or educational goal.

Three levels of English study:
Level 1 – Students with little or no English
Level II – Students with some experience with English (Intermediate)
Level III – Students with some proficiency yet need academic language (Advanced)

The ESL program consists of:
- Computer and Internet instruction (internet account for email)
- Classroom Instruction
- Current and World Events
- Vocabulary/Conversation/Pronunciation
- Visits to local historic/scenic sites (ie. Gross Morne, Cabot Tower, Boat Tours, etc.)
- Social Activities

In order to maximize opportunities to practice English and to learn more about Canadian and Newfoundland and Labrador’s lifestyle and culture, ESL students are encouraged to participate in a Homestay program and take part in social activities of the family.

Academy Canada is supportive of the needs of the whole student and that includes assisting our students with accommodations. We will offer students assistance with a Homestay program. Homestay is a service where students live with a Canadian family in a home setting. The International Department of Academy Canada will make arrangements to have you picked up at the airport and take you to your homestay family. The College will provide all students with a tour of the city. The campus will provide an orientation day to assist students with integration.

Vacation ESL (English as a Second Language)
Academy Canada’s Vacation ESL program is a short intensive English program that will cover reading, speaking, writing and listening English. The Vacation ESL program is suitable for both the low intermediate to advanced English speaking students.
