News ArchiveTherapeutic Recreation Students Host "Celebrating Diversity" Event at St. John's Hindu TempleOn November 13, 2008, Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Professional) students from Academy Canada’s Kenmount Road Campus organized and participated in an event called Celebrating Diversity held at the Hindu Temple in St. John’s. This was an opportunity for students to share and learn with seniors from various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Participants were treated to a traditional East Indian meal and a woman from Quebec taught them a traditional dance. Celebrating Diversity was the final event in the six-week Bridging Cultures program, which pairs students with seniors from other countries and cultures. They have an opportunity to share knowledge about their country, cultures, and traditions. This event is a time when all participants have an opportunity to come together as a group and share what they’ve learned from each other. Academy Canada's Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Professional) program is offered at Corner Brook and Kenmount Road campuses.

Corner Brook Campus Students Participate in Various Professional Oriented Field TripsAcademy Canada's effort to ensure students gain real world skills not only happens inside the classroom, but also through participation in applied learning related professional shows held across Newfoundland and Labrador, across Canada, and even abroad. These seminars and trade shows also allow our students to learn from their industry and trades oriented leaders, and apply these skills to their chosen career paths. The Criminology and Law Enforcement Administration students recently participated in COTS and self-defence training as part of their programs. Every two years, the Corner Brook Campus invites Peter Kelly from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary to provide rigourous hands-on self defence training using police batons, pepper spray, hand cuffs, and other self-defence practices and procedures to prepare our Criminology and Law Enforcement Administration students for the rigours of their prospective Law Enforcement and Security based careers. As well, our Hairstyling students travelled to the Rusk Trade Show held in Gander to gain stronger hands-on knowledge of the Rusk Technique and Rusk hair care products. The Rusk Technique is used widely throughout the Corner Brook area, and our Hairstyling students attended the Rusk Trade Show this semester where they saw the Rusk Technique in action. Exploring New Skills at the Harding Road Campus
Students at the Harding Road Campus spent Wednesday, June 20th developing their professional skills during Student Professional Development Day. The morning was spent in the classroom, actively discussing the tools, traits and characteristics of ambitious, proactive and highly successful professionals. Students had an opportunity to participate in shops other than their own during the afternoon session. For example, a Construction/Industrial Electrician student would prepare cream of mushroom soup from scratch in our professional kitchen and a Cook student would wire a light bulb, controlled by a single-pole switch arrangement in the Electrical Shop. The purpose of this exchange is to promote a better understanding of the different trades. It was also a lot of fun! Other activities in the shops included: using the air gun in the Automotive Shop to change tires, building a bench in the Carpenter Shop, soldering pipes in the Steamfitter/Pipefitter shop, and Oxy Fuel welding in the Welding Shop. A big thank you goes out to all of the instructors and students that made this day possible. Special thanks to two of our Construction Electrician Apprentices: Shannon Bown and Carl Chidley. They did a fantastic job giving some of our students an introduction to the electrical trade.

What’s cooking at the Corner Brook Campus?
It is with great pride that we announce that Eric Penney has successfully challenged his Red Seal in the Cook Occupation. Eric first enrolled in the cooking program in September 2003. We are certainly building a legacy in the trades at our Corner Brook campus and are graduating students in the advanced levels of training in Welder, Carpenter, and now Cook occupations.
The students and staff of Academy Canada wish to express sincerest congratulations to Eric on this amazing milestone in his career and hats off to his instructor Frank Diamond, we know you must be proud and share in that pride!

Career Counseling Conference held by the
Business Administration (Marketing, Human Relations, Accounting) Students
"Learning for the Real World" definitely describes Kenmount Road Campus’ Business Students latest project. As a major hands-on learning experience, these students put the skills they learned in their "Meeting and Special Event Planning" course to work.
On April 25th, 2007 Career Counselors from the Avalon Region congregated for a day filled with information gathering, tours and presentations organized and lead exclusively by Academy Canada Students.
The students began the day at the Harding Road Trades Campus in St. John’s. Following registration those attending were treated to a complementary breakfast (Eggs Benedict – none the less) prepared by the Culinary Arts – Cook Students. The event continued with an interactive tour of the campuses well equipped Trades Shops (Electrical, Welding, Carpentry, Steamfitting/Pipefitting, and Plumbing). Students showcased their skills through demonstrations – an experience few counselors could appreciate prior to their visit.
Following the Trades Campus visit the experience was mirrored at Academy Canada’s Kenmount Road Campus – home to our academic programs in St. John’s where again, tours were conducted, work demonstrated, and students’ skills showcased. On behalf of the class and the staff at both campuses we also wish to thank the many guest speakers who presented over the lunch time period. Information surrounding our students’ success and our graduates’ employment was particularly enlightening and well received (and the many prizes presented was also a nice touch)
Feedback from all community groups represented, namely Service Canada, Workplace Health and Safety commission, Y-Employment and Enterprises Service and CBDC was exceedingly positive. Not only did they learn a lot about Academy Canada, our programs, and our services, but they also saw first hand the outstanding skills our students are developing along the way.

Academy Canada has once again had a good showing in the Culinary field. Allan Hussey, an entry level student at the Harding Road Campus, won the silver medal in the annual Knorr Swiss Culinary Competition held at the College of the North Atlantic which consisted of 6 competitors. Allan's competitors were considered to be the best Entry level students on the Avalon Peninsula. Academy Canada's Kenmount Road Principal, James Loder,
will be presenting to the Labour Market Sub-Committee of the Strategic Partnership Initiative on October 29, 2006in St. John’s.
Reports of skill shortages in the province and throughout Canada are emerging daily. We can all look around our communities and see the growing number of help wanted signs. We can also see competition for our workers from employers in other provinces. Demographic and technological trends will increase these pressures over the next ten to fifteen years, here and among other industrialized countries throughout the world. We need to collectively understand what is happening and to collaborate on dealing with the challenges. Otherwise, we risk facing a crisis that could limit our continued social and economic growth.
To help address this, the Labour Market Sub-Committee of the Strategic Partnership Initiative and the Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment will host the first provincial labour market symposium for Newfoundland and Labrador on October 29, 30 and 31, 2006 at the Fairmont Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL. The theme for the symposium is “Building Healthy Labour Markets in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Healthy labour market development is essential to help ensure individuals and organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are ready to take advantage of the opportunities that our provincial economy holds and to meet emerging challenges. James Loder will be representing the interests of Academy Canada students and Faculty at this exciting Symposium.
Academy Canada's Kenmount Road Principal, James Loder, going to Ottawa
Kenmount Road Principal, James Loder, attended meetings of the National Association of Career College (NACC) in Ottawa from October 1-4, 2006. The NACC is an association of private career training institutions from across Canada and companies offering products and services to those organizations. Originally established as an association of private business educators, it began in Hamilton, Ontario in 1896 as the Business Educators Association. In 1991 the name was changed from the Association of Canadian Career Colleges to the National Association of Career Colleges, in keeping with its role as the national "umbrella" organization.
The NACC purpose is to encourage excellence in the private training sector and to promote the interests of its members and their students at the national level. As the national representative from Newfoundland and Labrador, James represents the interests of provincial students and faculty at the federal level. During the October meetings James and other provincial representatives met with several Members of Parliament and discussed issues such as International Student Recruitment, Student Aid, mobility of workers and apprenticeship skills training. We also had the opportunity to meet with the Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn about educational issues of particular relevance to this province.

WOMEN IN THE KITCHEN
Commercial Cooking - a field once dominated by men
By Jean Edwards Stacey, The Telegram
"It's the art of cooking that interests me", says Lori Ryan as she carefully rolls out a ball of snow white bread dough and shapes it into a neat oval shape. Ryan, from Clarke's Beach, is a student in Academy Canada's commercial cooking program. The course has been offered at Academy Canada's Trades Division on Harding Road in St. John's since 2004, and has been available at the Corner Brook campus since 2001. Ryan, who was busy making the Pullman Bread that is used for sandwiches, is among several women, including Wendy Belbin, Cavell Crocker, Stacey sutton and Stephanie Foley, who are all enrolled at the Harding Road campus. Their instructors are Chef Nick Flynn and Dean Bryne.
"We offer continuous (enrolment), but the largest group of students starting in September", Flynn says. "It's a nine month course that really works as an apprenticeship program because everyone learns from everyone else".
Belbin, from Red Bay, Labrador and Sutton from Salmon Cove, Conception Bay, both started the Cook program in September. "I've always enjoyed cooking", Belbin says. "Even as a little child I was into cooking and baking. I used to climb up on a chair and help my grandmother, Mina Buckle. She's known for her cooking and baking. She makes really good pies, especially raisin."
Sutton had a stint at University before deciding to become a cook. "I went to University and it wasn't for me", she says. "I like doing things that are hands on."
Coaker, from the Goulds, is a soon-to-be graduate who started the program in January. She'd like to get a job baking in a hotel setting.
Foley, a St. John's native who will graduate as a cook in June, would like to own and operate her own restaurant one of these days.
Ryan started the program in April and someday she, too, would like to have her own restaurant and serve home-cooked meals.
"Push and tuck, push and tuck", Byrne says as he comes over to observe how Ryan is getting on with her bread dough. "Tuck underneath and pinch." Ryan finishes off her rolls and puts them on a tray. She makes three slashes in the top of each roll before sliding the pan into the waiting oven.
Commercial cooking, a field once dominated by men, is attracting an every-increasing number of women, as Flynn and Byrne. "This year, 10 of the 19 students in our commercial cooking program in St. John's are women," says Byrne. "Cooking is the in thing. It's trendy, and more and more women are getting involved in the cooking industry." Willy Smith, Principal of Academy Canada in Corner Brook, says women make up a record 80% of this years cook class.
On the Monday we visited the kitchen on Harding Road, students were busy preparing lunch, a meal that can be purchased at the school's cafeteria. Guided by instructors Flynn and Byrne, the students put together the day's menu which included cheese corn chowder Santa Fe, apricot maple glazed port chops, harvest rice and spiced squash.
In the bakery section, some students were making bread and croissants. Others were putting the final touches on desserts that included trifle and a mixed pear and Newfoundland berry cobbler or grunt. By 12:30, lunch is over and the students have to clean up before beginning an afternoon of theory. "We all take off our whites and go across the hall to the classroom," says Byrne.
During the day students get two 15 minute breaks and a half-hour lunch. "The whole idea is to invoke discipline and create a realistic environment or experience," says Flynn. "And outside school we try to get the students to exhibit social responsibility". "We tell the students it's not like coming to school - it's like coming to work." Flynn also adds "We try to make everything as realistic as possible".

HAIRSTYLIST AND STEAMFITTER/PIPEFITTER ACCREDITATION RESULTS
(Date Published: August 3, 2005)
MEMO
From: Michael Barrett, President Academy Canada
Date: August 1, 2005
July has been a very busy month for all those involved in program accreditation and program re-accreditation visits. Academy Canada’s Hairstylist program both in St. John’s and Corner Brook had their re-accreditation visit and Steamfitter/Pipefitter in St. John’s had their initial accreditation visit. I am very pleased to say that all three accreditation teams have recommended these programs for accreditation and re-accreditation.
Congratulations are in order for all those whose commitment and teamwork made this a reality.
Preparing for an accreditation review is certainly not an easy task, as I know you are all aware. It takes a major commitment to your field and to the training provided to the students. The time leading up to the visit I am sure was very stressful, as you knew the team would be scrutinizing every part of the program, its delivery and the facilities in which you operate. I am told that all accreditation site visit days went very well and that the teams were generally very impressed. The pride you have taken in your work must have been evident to them every step of the way.
I specifically what to acknowledge Ed Christopher’s work leading up to the visits. He has coordinated the process flawlessly. I also know that he could have never done this alone. I am proud to work with such a talented and dedicated group of individuals.
Sincerely,
Michael Barrett
President
ACADEMY CANADA AND LAWRENCE COLLEGE JOIN FORCES
(Date Published: August 1, 2005)
Academy Canada is pleased to announce that Lawrence College is joining forces with Academy Canada to offer a stronger education experience to the post-secondary students.
Academy Canada and Lawrence College have enjoyed a history of mutual cooperation through their memberships in the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) and its provincial branch Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Career Colleges (NLACC). The Principals of both Academy Canada and Lawrence College have served on the Executives of both organizations. As well, both colleges are accredited by the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission (CETAC), which sets national standards for post-secondary education.
Although programs previously offered at Lawrence College will now be administered by Academy Canada at its Kenmount Road campus, there will be no change in curriculum. Students who have applied for admission to Lawrence College for September 2005 are advised that, while the location of their program has changed, the terms of their admission remain the same, and they can continue to receive administrative support from Lawrence College staff.
The following programs are the programs that were offered by Lawrence College that will now be offered at the St. John’s, Kenmount Road campus.
