Corner Brook Campus Represented Well At "2009 Corner Brook Santa Claus Parade"

Santa’s elves were in full form at Academy Canada’s Corner Brook Campus this year as our college participated in not one, but two floats at the "Corner Brook Santa Claus Parade".

Our theme for this year’s parade was a Country Christmas, and nothing says a Country Christmas more than ice skating on a pond with a roaring fire as was displayed on our float.

Not only did Academy Canada have a float in the parade, but Steve Galliott and his carpenter elves were busy redesigning and building a new float for Santa himself.

A wonderful way to start the festive holiday season.

Harding Road Campus Students Compete At The 13th Annual Cooking Competition

Three cooking students from the Harding Road Campus took part in the 13th Annual Culinary Competition at the College of the North Atlantic on November 21, 2009. The Canadian Culinary Federation, St. John’s Branch and the Chicken Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador hosted this competition.

Aspiring chefs Alison Starks, Liam McNamara, and Paul Templeton competed in this type of competition for the first time. They competed against students from the College of the North Atlantic as well as chefs from St. John's finest restaurants. The students were given a black box of ingredients to create a three course meal with the main protein being chicken.

For an appetizer, our students served Salmon and Scallop Mousselline, dressed in Leek with Sweet Potato Purée and Roasted Beetroot bundle. The main course was Chicken Galantine and Beurre Rouge served with Fennel Risotto in a Red Sweet Potato Crib and Sweet Brussels Sprout Almandine. Finally, the dessert consisted of a Sweet Tuile drizzled with Clementine and Chocolate Beetroot Glazes.

Although our aspiring chefs not win, they completed their appetizer, main course, and dessert with flying colours.

Students felt they learned a lot from the competition and competing alongside some well known Chefs. Special thanks to Catherine for volunteering her time with the Academy Canada team.

Therapeutic Recreation Students Have Excellent Field Trip

On November 6, 2009, Chris Jackson provided the Kenmount Road Therapeutic Recreation class participated in a wheelchair basketball workshop. The class learned special adaptable basketball tips and techniques. They also did a session on cooperative and low organized games using equipment from the Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability.

The students had an awesome time and learned that disabilities are not necessarily barriers but rather invitations to do things differently.

About the Active Living Alliance:

The Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability is a national network created in 1989 to motivate and assist Canadians with a disability to become more physically active. While an active lifestyle is important for all Canadians, it is particularly important for those with a disability. Research has demonstrated that active individuals can enjoy better overall health, improved quality of life, elevated self-esteem, prolonged independent living in later life, and increased mobility. For individuals with a disability, these benefits help make coping with the everyday life challenges much easier, and can even prevent relapses of certain disabilities or health problems.

Here in Newfoundland and Labarador, it has a core network of individuals, agencies, communities and organizations who are dedicated to facilitating increased activity across the province. Their desire is to see this network expand as the Active Living Alliance reaches out to involve partners and stakeholders at local and provincial levels.

Kenmount Road Campus Students Provide Volunteer Services for Former USA President William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton

On May 27, 2009, the Honourable William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton, 42nd President of the United States of America, visited St. John's for the "Power Within" Presentation.

Legal Studies Student, Tiffany Budgell, and Criminology Students, Ryan Small and Amanda Bishop, provided volunteer services for this event, which took place at Mile One Centre.

Volunteers met and were briefed about their potential jobs the previous evening. When our students arrived on Thursday morning, they were informed about their duties.

Amanda Bishop and Tiffany Budgell directed VIP and Emerald ticket holders to their seats. Before the event began, these guests were given an opportunity to meet Former President Clinton and to take pictures.

Ryan Small, along with several Secret Service Agents, were responsible for ensuring no one cut in line for this opportunity.

Ryan stated that while fulfilling his role, a Supervisor directed him to have a picture taken with Bill Clinton. Former President Clinton put his arm over his shoulder for the picture and shook hands.

He said it was exciting to meet Former President Clinton, and to be involved with the event.

During their duties, three students also met other local celebrities, including Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams, Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones, and Finance Minister Jerome Kennedy.

Premier Danny Williams introduced Former President Bill Clinton, discussing the similarities between them: "You govern a place called Little Rock, and I govern one big Rock". Clinton also relayed how the only two provinces he never visited are Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and when given a choice of where to make a presentation, he chose our province. He discussed the beauty of St. John's, and wished he had more time to explore our region. When he learned that St. John's has the most bars per capita in Canada, he was relieved that he was leaving immediately after the presentation to fly to Halifax.

Kenmount Road Campus students agreed that meeting Former President Bill Clinton and provincial political leaders was a lifetime opportunity.

The President’s Award is Academy Canada’s highest honour awarded to one student from each campus reflecting the ideals we strive to install for all graduates including leadership, professionalism, positive attitude, good overall average, and a willingness to participate in school and extra-curricular activities. Staff members made recommendations to Academy Canada President, Mr. Mike Barrett, who then selects a recipient. It was a difficult decision to make since there are several deserving students for this award.

Keith Goulding presented this honour to Esthetics and Spa Management with Electrolysis student, June McKay. She has been a positive role model, cheerleader, spokesperson, and an occasional referee to all her classmates. She also conducts herself with professionalism and dignity.

Congratulations to our 2009 Graduates, you worked and persevered to get to this point. Where you go from here on out is entirely up to you.

Criminology Students Tour Her Majesty's Penitentiary

On May 15, Kenmount Road Campus Criminology students were given a tour of Her Majesty's Penitentiary.

Under Lieutenant Noseworthy's instructive direction, students were able to acquire further insight into a Corrections Officer's occupational responsibilities.

For a moment, most students were volunteering to experience confinement in a prison cell to get a first-hand glimpse into an inmate's life.

From the main gate and visitor's building to the living units, students were grateful to have an opportunity to learn about modern correctional practices and approaches while seeing a part of Newfoundland and Labrador's correctional history.

Academy Canada Welders Pass Journeyperson Exam

Academy Canada is proud to announce that 7 Academy Canada Welding students recently wrote and successfully passed their Journeyperson exam!

Congratulations to Wayne Brockerville, William Drover, John Flynn, Mike Lacey, Terry Nicholl, Chad Ralph and Robert Richards on a job very well done.

About the Journeyperson/Red Seal program:

The Journeyperson/Interprovincial Standards “Red Seal” Program was established to provide greater mobility for skilled workers across Canada.

The program is administered in each province and territory under the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) guidance. Each province and territory has an appointed Director of Apprenticeship for this purpose.

A national occupational analysis, developed for each Red Seal trade, is used as a base document for interprovincial standard examinations development, and all provinces and territories are encouraged to use it for curriculum development.

Continuing efforts are underway to expand the program and to streamline existing processes for national occupational analyses and examinations revisions and development.

The Red Seal Website will enable you to learn more about apprenticeship, trades, the Red Seal and certification. You will also find a comparative apprenticeship training programs chart across Canada, known as "The Ellis Chart", a list of Red Seal trades, as well as occupational analysis.

For more information about the Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson program, visit their website at http://www.red-seal.ca/Site/index_e.shtml.

Academy Canada and Eastern Education Foundation Partner to Help Local School Buy New Multimedia Equipment

Representatives from Academy Canada and the Eastern Education Foundation recently visited Mary Queen of Peace school in St. John’s to present them with a $1000 cheque to assist in the purchase of a new computer and scanner for their multimedia lab.

The award was made as part of the Eastern Education Foundation’s grant program, an excellent initiative designed to recognize outstanding projects local elementary, junior high and high school submitted. Mary Queen of Peace students under Bruce Lane's direction won their prize in recognition of their successful “Photo Album” initiative.

About the Mary Queen of Peace "Photo Album" Project:

In 1998-1999, Mary Queen of Peace started their International Photography Gallery. Since that time, approximately 5000 photos have been displayed in that gallery. When photographers submit photos to the gallery, they also give permission to the students to use their photographs in school projects.

In the Fall of 2006, six Grade 3 students were trained to add French and English keywords for each photo, enabling students and teachers to quickly find photos they can use in their projects.

Most photographers have extended their permission to include students anywhere in the world! As a result, we invite students and teachers worldwide to use our Mary Queen of Peace photo album as an educational resource. We ask that you email the school to let us know that you are using the photos and, if possible, send us any links to pages on which the photos have been used. Users must give credit to the photographer.

If you would like to submit photos to this gallery please forward to brucelane@esdnl.ca and I will have students add them to our project.
