In order to grow its program offerings and enrollment over the last 25 years, the College has strived to build partnerships with many leading provincial and national organizations. Since beginning skilled trades training in 1999, Academy Canada has sought the advice, mentorship and guidance from many NLCA members. They have assisted us as accreditation teams, graduate employers, and work term host members. NLCA Executive Director, Rhonda Neary, and their board have been particularly helpful as they work diligently to meet the NLCA mandate of bridging the industry-educational gap towards the training community, construction sector and college graduates mutual benefits. We have eagerly agreed to host the new Corner Brook Bid Depository as well as co-hosted portions of the 2009 NLCA Annual Conference, offered Lunch and Learn sessions, supported each other in industry advertising, and provided many volunteers for high profile Association events. The College has also worked with the NLCA to ensure that the Gold Seal Program is offered in the province to allow our many experienced trades people the opportunity to enhance their credentials. One of the proudest accomplishments between NLCA and Academy Canada, however, remains our mutual willingness to give new college graduates an opportunity to succeed. Whether it is through a member company or the Association office itself, the College has always been able to find honourable and quality employment opportunities for our students. These jobs helped kick-start many excellent careers and contributed towards the 21 century skilled labor force development. Academy Canada would like to thank the NLCA for its ongoing support and express our strong desire to work even more closely in 2010-11. Academy Canada Has Another Successful CETAC Accreditation VisitPosted April 28, 2010, Written November 2009 The college week of November 16-20, 2009 was a busy time for Academy Canada Career College. During this five day period, we hosted the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission (CETAC) as they conducted their annual national reaccreditation visits. We are thrilled to say that their visit was a tremendous success, and we are anticipating full reaccreditation once CETAC gives its final decision in a few weeks. This will be the 17th straight year that Academy Canada has received this prestigious endorsement. Academy Canada is proud of our students, faculty, and staff who have invested significant time, energy, and resources to pursue many optional provincial and national accreditations designed to evaluate a specific program or the organization in general. Of particular pride to Academy Canada is the fact that our Corner Brook and St. John's campuses are currently Newfoundland and Labrador's only schools to be CETAC accrediteed. We are also excited to have more program accreditations through the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board than any other independent college in the province. Each endorsement validates the college's work and provides further confidence that Academy Canada represents an excellent training alternative. ABOUT CETAC The Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission, or CETAC for short, has been offering quality Canadian private career colleges an opportunity to pursue institutional accreditation since 1984. Through this voluntary, yet rigourous process, institutions are evaluated based on a range of quality standards including organizational mission, student learning and job readiness, staff quality, leadership, facilities, financial stability, marketing, and future planning. If an academic institution successfully obtains CETAC accreditation, a college is considered to be among Canada's best as they have proven their dedication to quality through an independent third party. CETAC Goals CETAC has established a set of benchmarks that it expects will serve as the standard for quality assurance and continuing quality improvement among Canada’s private career colleges. Through CETAC participation, students, employers, and others can be confident that an accredited institution meets or exceeds the highest quality standards in Canadian post-secondary education. Who benefits from Accreditation? The accredited institution gains access to external input, advice, and perspective. Faculty and staff obtain expert advice and feedback. Employers get stronger access to outstanding employment candidates. Most importantly, students benefit from training at Canada's most recognized career colleges. What does accreditation mean to potential employers? As an Academy Canada graduate, you may take your diploma anywhere in Canada. Having another agency outside Newfoundland and Labrador that can verify Academy Canada’s reputation will help employers gain confidence in our graduate's skill and competence, and ultimately help them secure employment nationwide.

Canadian Chamber of Commerce Warns About Impending Labour ShortagePosted February 25, 2010 In a recent Canadian Chamber of Commerce report, labour shortages that existed before the market downturn will resurface once Canada's economy recovers. Businesses will need to tap the country's under utilized talent pool including older workers, Aboriginals, individuals with disabilities, and new immigrants to address this looming shortage and stay competitive. The report states an affordable, accessible, and high-quality post secondary education system remains a key to ensuring a large and growing pool of skilled, knowledgeable workers needed to meet future labour market needs. More needs to be done to ensure affordable access to high-quality education for groups with low post secondary education participation rates including Aboriginals and disabled persons. With an aging population, institutions must also provide flexible programs, a greater delivery methods variety, and accommodate different learning styles to meet a mature adult learner's needs. For more information about the impending labour shortage, please read the Canadian Chamber of Commerce report entitled "Downturn, Recovery and Future Evolution of the Labour Market" at http://www.chamber.ca/images/uploads/Reports/2010/Labour-Market-220210.pdf.
