NewsletterThe View From Here (January 2010)How not to ruin a job interview The Globe and Mail - The interview was going well enough - until the job seeker reached over to the hiring manager's desk to pick up a cup of coffee, and promptly spilled the mocha all over the dove-grey carpet. “It was game over for the candidate, whose gaffe made it impossible to refocus on the job discussion”, says Warren Lundy, a partner with Toronto-based executive coaching and recruitment firm Feldman Daxon Partners Inc., when describing how a job hunter he was advising blew a big opportunity. It was a particularly disastrous slip, but "a lot of interviewers are getting increasingly ticked about even minor gaffes these days," Mr. Lundy says. "Because they have so many people asking for their time, if they see something they don't like in the first few minutes, they are apt to try to end the encounter as quickly as possible, and move on to someone who shows more savvy and care." Candidates can blow it for themselves in many ways, according to a poll of nearly 500 hiring managers by the Society for Human Resource Management. We asked some Canadian pros to weigh in on moves the survey found most likely to be fatal in job interviews. Click here to read more. Academy Canada "Wall Of Fame"
Graduate Spotlight - Georgina Clarke A wise person once said that you should never wait for your ship to come in. You should swim out to meet it! Georgina (Eanie) Clarke must have taken that advice to heart. After graduating from Academy Canada’s Esthetics and Spa Management with Electrolysis (ESME) program in 2009, she didn’t go on a job hunt – she made her own career when she formed “Aurora World Spa” in Whitbourne, NL. Originally born in Newfoundland, Georgina grew up in Winnipeg, MB. When the opportunity arose to return to the province, she jumped at it. She then set her mind to building a business that would help her, her husband Richard and two sons, Cody and Dakota, stay and prosper. After her mom passed away, Georgina decided to pursue a new path in life and follow her dream of working in the Esthetics profession. She investigated her training options and ultimately decided to attend Academy Canada. She is happy she did! “The teachers were amazing”, she said “and they continued to help me ever after I finished school”. I regularly get calls from prospective students and always highly recommend the program. While her teachers were obviously a big part of her success, Georgina deserves the credit for her accomplishments. After committing herself fully to her studies, she graduated with Honors + Distinction and also won the ESME Program Award. When asked what about the future, Georgina simply smiled and said that it is fantastic! She has no doubt that future economic and population growth in the area combined with outstanding customer service will cause her business to expand for a very long time. Academy Canada is proud to have Georgina Clarke as an Alumni – she represents us exceedingly well. Life as a … Plumber One of the most misunderstood skilled trades occupations is the Plumber. Despite the perception of some, this is actually a very rewarding, high paying profession that offers tremendous job satisfaction. Plumbers plan, install and service plumbing systems, fixtures, piping equipment, and controls. These piping systems may be used to transport water, waste, gases, or hot liquids. On a typical construction job, plumbers do the “roughing in” after the frame and roof of a new building are in place. In other words, they:
Plumbers return to the construction site after the plasterers or drywallers, tilesetters, and floor covering installers have completed their work to do the “finishing” work such as installing sinks, tubs, and toilets. Plumbers may specialize in the types of work they do:

Corner Brook Campus Fall 2009 NewsletterThis fall has seen a fun filled exciting beginning of another school year at the Corner Brook campus. Our campus welcomed over 330 new and returning students in a variety of programs, including our new "Occupational, Health, and Safety" program. We kicked off our year with some exciting orientation activities including a carnival styled ice cream social, white water rafting tour down the mighty Humber River, and a zip-line tour across the Steady Brook Falls. This year the Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Economic Development Association (NLREDA) honoured Academy Canada with an award for the work our students, faculty, and staff perform in regional development. As well, we hosted Operation Full Plate in conjunction with Steele Communications and our campus was the local food bank's drop off site. Our cooking students have been very busy plying their trade catering a meal for NLREDA, as well as a Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner for Immaculate Heart of Mary School students. Halloween was a treat as our staff and students got into the Halloween spirit and participated in a campus wide costume contest and a kids Halloween party. Therapeutic Recreation class participated in the Newfoundland and Labrador Therapeutic Recreation Association’s (NLTRA) annual convention in Gander Massage Therapy students provided Massage services to the Corner Brook Royals as part of our Sports Outreach.
