Massage Therapy

Diploma of Health and Human Sciences

The Massage Therapy program is Academy Canada’s newest addition to compliment our programs. The Massage Therapy program prepares to work in Canada's fastest growing health care field.

This field has been growing rapidly as a result of a healthcare system that promotes individual well-being. In addition, there is an increasing trend for practitioners to see massage therapy as an important rehabilitation tool for clients.

Massage therapy is the assessment and treatment of the body's soft tissues. Therapeutic Massage is used to prevent dysfunction, relieve pain, restore or augment muscular functions, and promote overall health.

Used alone or in conjunction with other medical, pharmaceutical, or physical modalities, massage therapy can be effective in the treatment of many different conditions such as soft tissue injuries and dysfunctions, chronic painful conditions, and many different stressful illnesses.

Massage therapy can help to improve relaxation and reduce stress. Infants, seniors, sports enthusiasts, office workers, people of all ages and walks of life can benefit from the healing touch of massage therapy. It encompasses a range of different techniques which can affect the circulatory, musculoskeletal, nervous, and respiratory systems, forming basis of massage therapy treatment.

Hydrotherapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, proper breathing instruction, and posture assessment and correction are also tools that massage therapists regularly employ in their treatment protocols.

Academy Canada’s Massage Therapy curriculum was developed by Centennial College in Ontario. As a large and diverse public college with four campuses across Toronto, they have a reputation for exemplary teaching, innovative programming, and extensive industry partnerships.

Academy Canada, in consultation with the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMTNL), the Newfoundland and Labrador Massage Therapists’ Association (NLMTA), and a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), ensures high professional and educational standards for its Massage Therapy program and students.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, employment opportunities for Massage Therapists has expanded considerably. Service Canada predicts that the employment growth rate for therapy and assessment professionals will likely be above average because of ongoing trends - a growing and aging population that requires more health services, technology advances that improve the ability to diagnose/treat diseases, and increased government funding for health care. Although the retirement rate will likely be below average, the number of retiring workers should contribute to job openings. Service Canada also reports that the hourly wages ($26.08) are above the average ($18.07), and the rate of wage growth is also above average.

Registered Massage Therapists may choose to practice in a variety of settings. Many will become self employed, while others may work in massage clinics, chiropractors or doctors' offices, spas, health clubs, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. This profession can be highly flexible affording individuals the opportunity to choose work schedules that best suits their needs.

NOTE: Academy Canada College cannot guarantee employment to any student or graduate. Academy Canada has no affect on salaries as they are determined by individual private and/or public organizations.
