Have you ever considered giving a student a head start
on their career? Academy Canada's work term program
can provide this opportunity while giving you the assistance
you may need for your business.
Purpose of Work Terms
Student work terms are an integral part of educational
experience. Experience in one's chosen field, under
the guidance of those who successfully carry out the
day-to-day demands of a particular field, give the student
an opportunity to feel first hand what their future
careers may entail and what kinds of opportunities may
exist in their chosen field. Our students cover many
aspects of their field of study while in the classroom
but it is the chance to apply these skills that will
consolidate this learning. Host supervisors play an
important role in, among others, developing professional
ethics, co-workers relations and time management. We
can provide the textbooks but only you can provide "reality".
We would like to take this opportunity to thank-you
for your interest in our programs.

Host Information
As a host, we realize that your commitment to our student
should not cause you to overlook your first priority
. . . your clients and customers. The following information
has been gathered to assist you and answer any questions
you may have.
1. Cost: Academy Canada does not require that hosts
pay work term students.
2. Insurance: All students are covered by a liability
insurance policy held by Academy Canada. Further details
can be given upon request.
3. Selection Process: Host organizations are encouraged
to request interviews before selecting a student. If
your organization would like to take advantage of this
opportunity, Academy Canada will make the necessary
arrangements.
If you prefer to have Academy Canada staff assign a
student to your organization, the decision will be a
combination of a variety of factors designed to try
and meet the needs of the host organization and the
students. Some host organizations may request certain
skills/attributes such as proficiency in word processing,
exceptional presentation skills, etc. . . . to meet
the expectations of the duties to be assigned during
the work term.
Another factor involved in the selection process is
the instructor's determination of the ability of a student
and the host organization to be compatible. For example,
a work term that requires a large amount of unsupervised
time and front-line decision making may not be the best
selection for a student that requires structure and
having a leader. The opposite may also be true. Hence,
once a student is assigned/selected for your organization
these factors have been given consideration to help
facilitate the success of the student and your experience
with our college.
4. Confidentiality: All students must sign a Confidentiality
Agreement before being assigned a work term. Students
have been informed that to reveal confidential information
may result in dismissal from the work term and that
the host has a right to legally pursue such incidents.
Organizations are encouraged to require the student
to sign a similar internal confidentiality agreement.
5. Journals: Maintenance of a journal is sometimes
recommended to assist the student in assimilating experience
with knowledge. Students who are required to keep a
journal of their experiences have been informed that
there are to be no identifying marks on the document.
The host agency has the right to preview and edit the
journal before it is passed in for grading.
6. Attendance: Students are expected to follow the
same attendance policy as other staff members of the
host organization. Students are to call their "employer"
before the beginning of a shift if they are going to
be absent and then call our campus.
Instructors/administrative staff will assume attendance
on a day-to-day basis unless the student informs them
otherwise. A pattern of absence may result in the student
being dismissed from the work term.
7. Training: Students must successfully complete their
work terms or practicum's in order to graduate.
I) Practicum: A practicum involves field experience
and a selection of academic/professional objectives
the student must attain in order to pass the training.
These objectives are created and monitored by the participating
instructor.
II) Work Term: During a work term the student assumes
full assimilation in the work place. The determination
of success rests with the host organization feedback.
Some programs combine these two types of training.
Students and hosts will be contacted or visited by an
Academy Canada representative throughout the course
of the work term to monitor the student's progress.
Evaluation: Host organizations are requested to complete
a one-page checklist on the student's progress every
two weeks and to complete a final evaluation at the
end of the work term. We request that the Final Evaluation
be returned within three weeks of the final end date.
The Diploma or Certificate cannot be awarded until the
evaluation is received.
We encourage all hosts to review evaluations with the
students before they are returned to the school.
Expenses: If the student is requested to incur expenses
(travel, hotel, long distance call, etc.) that are directly
related to the duties of his/her job, the host organization
is expected to reimburse the student at the same rates
as for other staff persons. However, the student, unless
paid for by the company, will incur the cost of travel
to a work term.
