Santana Billard (Instructor)

Early Childhood Educators play a crucial role in a child’s development and have a significant impact on their overall well-being. They introduce children to early academic concepts, such as literacy and numeracy, and promote essential skills like problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Beyond academic skills, they also play an important role in social and emotional development and shaping the lives of children as a whole. To celebrate Early Childhood Education Week, we’re be spotlighting some of the amazing faculty and student members of our ECE program.

Meet Santana Billard

Santana is a member of our Early Childhood Education department. She completed training in both education and nursing and has 10 years of experience working as an Early Childhood Educator. We are lucky to have her on our team to bring her knowledge and experience into the classroom. Fun fact: Santana has also worked at Creative Beginnings, Academy Canada’s childcare centre in Corner Brook!

We asked Santana some questions about what led her to the career she has today – check it out!

Q: What inspired you to start your career in early childhood education?

My inspiration came at an early age. I would spend a lot of time participating in role-playing with my friends and learning different ways to do tasks. I would pretend to read to others, teach my “class” and take care of my dolls. As I grew older, I became a responsible babysitter. It was always so rewarding when the children I babysat would see me outside of babysitting and would have a happy response. When it came time for me to decide what I wanted to do after high school, I looked back on my past experiences and knew that I wanted to pursue a career where I could provide positive, nurturing care for children. This decision led me to Early Childhood Education.

Q: What is your favorite part about training future ECEs?

My favorite part of training the future in the ECE program is the rewarding feeling that I will be a part of making a difference to the many communities and families that require child care. I have witnessed a lot of student progress so far through their practicum experiences and theory delivery. This shows the pride that they take in applying what they have learned and bringing it to a hands-on approach. From my perspective and the positive feedback I have received so far from the students and ECE community, they will be a great asset to the Early Childhood Education sector.

Q: If you could give a piece of advice to someone looking to start a career in Early Childhood Education, what would it be?

My advice to anyone who would like to begin a career in Early Childhood Education would be to work hard and show compassion to those who put their trust into you. The hard work will be rewarded in so many ways, from being a building block of a child’s learning journey, providing the family support that everyone needs, becoming an important community member, and helping shape the Early Childhood Education industry for the future. This program is life changing for everyone that is involved.

Thank you for all you do, Santana!
