Supporting Indigenous Initiatives
The following are some of the initiatives that Academy Canada has committed to celebrating/acknowledging each year. As an institution with a large Indigenous presence, we are dedicated to education, awareness, and celebration of our Indigenous groups.
National Indigenous Peoples Day
June 21st
National Indigenous Peoples Day is a celebration of the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions of Indigenous peoples across Canada. At our college, we honor this day by organizing a range of activities and events that highlight Indigenous culture, history, and contributions to our society. Additionally, our college may collaborate with local Indigenous organizations and communities to ensure the authenticity and meaningfulness of the celebrations. By actively engaging students, faculty, and staff in these events, our college fosters understanding, appreciation, and respect for Indigenous peoples and their heritage.
Red Dress Day
May 5th
Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is a solemn occasion to honor the lives of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals who have been victims of violence. At our school, we bring awareness to Red Dress Day by sharing community events, encouraging attendance, and participating in educational activities aimed at raising awareness about this issue and advocating for justice and change. By commemorating Red Dress Day, our school demonstrates its commitment to honoring the lives lost and working towards a future where all Indigenous peoples are treated with dignity, respect, and justice.
Moose Hide Campaign
May 16th
The Moose Hide Campaign is a grassroots movement aimed at ending violence against Indigenous women and children in Canada. It originated in 2011 when a father-daughter team, Paul and Raven Lacerte, from the Carrier First Nation in British Columbia, initiated the campaign. The campaign's symbol is a small piece of moose hide, which participants wear as a sign of their commitment to ending violence. Participants in the Moose Hide Campaign pledge to stand up against violence and to work towards creating safe and healthy communities for Indigenous women and children.
The campaign encourages men to take an active role in challenging and changing harmful attitudes and behaviors towards women and children. The Moose Hide Campaign has gained widespread support across Canada, with thousands of individuals, organizations, and communities participating in its activities and wearing the moose hide symbol. By raising awareness and fostering dialogue, the campaign aims to create positive change and build a future where all Indigenous women and children can live free from violence and fear.
Orange Shirt Day
September 30th
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day of reflection, learning, and action to honor the survivors and victims of the residential school system and to further reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples. At Academy Canada, we observe this important day by organizing a range of meaningful activities and initiatives aimed at promoting understanding, healing, and respect. Additionally, our school may collaborate with local Indigenous communities and organizations to ensure the authenticity and relevance of our commemorations, and also encourage staff and students to participate in locally organized events. By actively supporting the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our school reaffirms its commitment to truth, justice, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
