During his spare time, Wayne enjoys fishing with his grandson and currently working towards completing his post-secondary education certificate at Memorial University. Ray Cole – Harding Road Campus "Construction/Industrial Electrician Instructor"Hailing from beautiful Colliers, Conception Bay, Ray began teaching with the Electrical faculty at Academy Canada in 2006. He is a Red Seal Journeyman Electrician and holds a diploma Electronic Engineering diploma from Devry Institute of Technology. Ray is currently working towards a Certificate in Post Secondary Education at Memorial University. Before starting with Academy Canada, Ray worked as an office sales and services business owner for 25 years. He also worked in the Commercial, Residential and Industrial trade since 1997. Ray has taught entry level and advanced blocks of the Construction/Industrial Electrican program and prepares course materials, exams, class assignments, lab projects, and evaluates students on these components. Ray’s personal philosophy on education: “Education is a continuous learning experience.”
Russell Stacey – Harding Road Campus "Steamfitter/Pipefitter Instructor"Russell Stacey, originally from the town of Marystown, began teaching with Academy Canada in October 2008. He currently teaches the entry level Steamfitter/Pipefitter program and instructs theory aspects of the trade and demonstrates correct and safe way to perform tasks so students are prepared for the work force. Russell has worked as a Steamfitter/Pipefitter for approximately 42 years in Newfoundland and Alberta. During his early years, he worked mainly in the marine side of things but later moved into off shore construction and Alberta oil fields. During this time, he also held various supervisory positions. Russell’s personal philosophy on education: “In today’s world a good education is a must. Everybody deserves the right to an education.”
Roger Butler – Harding Road Campus "Construction/Industrial Electrician Instructor"
He holds an Inter-Provincial Journeyman Electrical Construction Certificate, a Diploma of Electrical Engineering Technology from the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a Certificate for Electronic Repairs from the College of Trades and Technology. Roger has worked with many different contractors over the years and contracted his own for a number of years. He was Chief Electrical Inspector for Bae-Newplan, a division of SNC Lavalin International, for several years. He then worked at the St. John’s Dockyard (Newdock) for seven years. With over 30 years experience in the field, Roger believes he is in a position to give students a well rounded view of the electrical field and what they can expect when they go to work. Roger’s personal philosophy on education: "Education is a lifelong process. School provides us with a solid, broad foundation of education upon which we can build a great education over the course of our lives." Melvin Fry – Harding Road Campus "Carpentry Instructor"
He is a Journeyman Carpenter with a Bachelor of Education (Post Secondary) Degree from Memorial University, and a Business Administration certificate. He is also an Architectural Drafting Technician. Prior to working with Academy Canada, Melvin spent eighteen years in the construction industry and eleven years working as an Engineering Technician/Building Inspector. In his spare time, Melvin loves to play golf, travelling, and enjoying the great outdoors. Melvin’s personal philosophy on education: “A person can never have too much education. It doesn’t weigh anything to carry it around.” Gary Spurrell – Harding Road Campus "Related Training Instructor"Gary Spurrell started teaching with Academy Canada in 2002 as a Related Training Instructor, and brings with him over 15 years teaching experience. He holds a Computer Studies Diploma as well as a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education Degree from Memorial University. Prior to working with Academy Canada, he spent over 5 years working as a High School teacher, and two years as an instructor at a college in Quebec. He also spent some time working as a Data Entry Consultant. Gary is originally from Clarenville and enjoys cycling, ski-dooing, reading, and going to work every day. Frank Whiteway - Harding Road Campus "Related Training Instructor"
He joined the Academy Canada instructional team in 2001 as a Computer Studies Instructor with the Kenmount Road Campus. He currently teaches trades related courses at the Harding Road Campus. His many certifications include Management Accounting, Microsoft Trainer, Microsoft Solution Developer, and Data Processing. He also holds Vocational Education Instructors Certificate. During his spare time, he enjoys making musical instruments and spending time with his family. Frank’s philosophy on education: “General enough to be adaptable – specific enough to be useful.” Jamie Warren – Harding Road Campus "Welding Instructor"Jamie Warren is a Welding program graduate from Academy Canada’s Corner Brook Campus, and eventually went on to receive his Red Seal Journeyperson Certification in 2004. In September 2007, Jamie joined the Academy Canada team as a Welding Instructor. As an instructor, he instructs students in various welding techniques and processes. Jamie is originally from Cook’s Harbour, and enjoys hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors as his personal pass times. Tony Snow - Harding Road Campus "Plumbing Instructor"Originally from Bell Island, Tony Snow is a well respected instructor, not only for his professional demeanor but also for his pleasant personality. Todd Smith - Harding Road Campus "Faculty of Culinary Arts: Cook Instructor"
Todd has a Food Services and Accommodations Certificate, a Red Seal Certificate in 1991, and a Vocational Education Certificate from the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education in August 2009. He actively participates with the Canadian Chef’s Association both local and national chapters. Todd instructs entry level "Faculty of Culinary Arts: Cook" program, displaying tremendous dedication, enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment to his students and the community. True to Academy Canada's credo, “learn for the real world”, not only does his students receive outstanding classroom and kitchen environment instruction, they also apply their culinary talents to prepare high quality meals for many fund raising and local events such as "Dancing With The Priests" and "Blind Date With The Stars". She graduated from the Office Administration Technology (Medical, Dental, Legal, Engineering) Program and started working as the Administrative Assistant at the Harding Road Campus shortly after. In June 2008, she took on a new role as the Business Office Assistant and then in September 2009 she became the campus Apprenticeship Assistant/Employment Coordinator. Jennifer’s main duties include conducting work term presentations, preparing placements, monitoring work terms, and assisting students with any issues or questions they might experience. She also assists the Apprenticeship Coordinator in helping manage the advanced training on campus. Three months after graduating from her program, she was hired as the Harding Road Campus Administrative Assistant, and is a great addition to our Administrative Support team. Her main duties include answering and directing incoming phone calls, assisting students and staff, photocopying, faxing, etc. Tracy grew up in the town of Placentia with her parents, two older siblings, and her favorite cat, Belle. Gayle began her work with Academy Canada in June of 2008 as the Campus Registrar. Before working at Academy Canada, she completed a Diploma Program in Human Resource Management at the College of the North Atlantic, and a Business Administration Degree at Memorial University. Then in May 2009, she also received her Bachelor of Education – Post Secondary Degree from Memorial University. The Campus Registrar is also known as the “Master of the Records.” Gayle ensures that all policies and procedures are followed, issues diplomas and transcripts for entry level and advanced students ensuring they are up to date and accurate, and monitors student attendance and progress throughout their program. In describing Gayle, one would say she has an outgoing personality. She is someone who is always smiling and is willing to lend a helping hand to others. In February 2009, he accepted the Facilities Manager position with the Harding Road Campus. Paul brings with him over 16 years Managerial experience in various capacities. His duties as Facilities Manager include managing facilities and equipment issues, overseeing equipment maintenance, offering technical support to staff, and purchasing materials and supplies for all programs. Paul who is originally from St. John’s. He enjoys Sailing, Skiing, and Snowmobiling during his free time. His strong work ethic, professional manner, and likable personality are just some of the characteristics that caught our attention, and the Harding Road Campus knew he would be an asset to the Academy Canada team. Wayne is very busy ensuring that the Harding Road Campus is running as efficiently as possible, and focusing on priorities that may rise. Before starting with Academy Canada, Melanie spent most of her time at Memorial University completing a Criminology Certificate, Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Sociology major, and working as a research assistant with Memorial University's Faculty of Education. From there, she went on to complete her Master of Arts in Sociology at McMaster University. Melanie enjoys her work but in her spare time, she has other interests and hobbies including Traveling, Running, and Horseback Riding. She often competes at various Running and Horseback Riding events throughout the year. Ken started with the College in 2007 after spending over 40 years working in the construction and industrial electrical trade. He built a successful career as the Town of Churchill Falls Maintenance Manager, Hydro Place Superintendent, and Holyrood Generating Plant Supervisor. Having supervised hundreds of Apprentices/Journeypersons, and also managed numerous multi-million dollar projects, Ken is well prepared to teach students the “tricks of the trade”. Beyond the worksite Ken has completed Industrial Electrical Systems, Power Transformers, Preventative Maintenance, and Indoor Air Quality Testing and Vibration Analysis courses, and also two courses from Dalhousie University. He is a Journeyman Electrician that knows his profession! In an effort to become the best manager and teacher possible, Ken has also taken it upon himself to complete the Dale Carnegie program, WHMIS Train-The-Trainer, and Effective Job Instruction courses. A student favorite, Ken continues to help our Electrical program grow and evolve to new heights. Jody Rees - Harding Road Campus "Welding Instructor"
As a Harding Road Campus team player, he participated in many major school activities, contributed extensively to program accreditation activities, and previously involved with the Occupational Health and Safety Committee to ensure our students and staff have a safe training environment. After graduating from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Welding program, Jody worked for 7 years with Canada's top metal fabrication companies including Coady’s Metal World, Elrus Aggregate Ltd, Custom Welder, PTI-Travco, and Burnco Rock Products. A quick learner, Jody easily obtained his Journeyperson status as well as all other major tickets. He recently obtained his Diploma of Vocational Education, a pround accomplishment for Jody, and is currently working on the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Inspector Certification. Jody has taken our Welding faculty's leading role and has been instrumental in the creating a program with great pride and commitment to the industry and College. Louis Hodder - Harding Road Campus "Steamfitter/Pipefitter Instructor"
A great guy and outstanding team player, Louis’ accomplishments are long and impressive. He possesses both Journeyman Steamfitter/Pipefitter and Carpenter certifications, and won the campuses Outstanding Instructor Award. He also graduated from the Memorial University of Newfoundland Post Secondary Instructor Certification program. Louis represents Newfoundland and Labrador on the Provincial Apprenticeship Board Advisory Committee, and is involved with creating the national certification exam. His work with the Accreditation team helped the Steamfitter/Pipefitter program get accredited without problem and his work on the Occupational Health and Safety Committee has ensured that the Campus operates in a safe and efficient way. The Administration even asked Louis to represent them during media interviews related to Canada's Skilled Labour force. Louis has worked at most major project sites throughout Newfoundland, including PKS (Marystown), Nodeco (Bull Arm), and PCL (Bull Arm). In addition to working with McNamara Construction, Newfoundland Dockyard, CP Rail, and Narwal Arctic Services (NWT), he has also operated his own business for 4 years. His impressive credentials combined with his professional approach helped Louis build an impressive set of student feedbacks and performance reviews making him a valuable Steamfitter/Pipefitter Instructor. Suzanne Jordan - Harding Road Campus and Corner Brook Campus "Apprenticeship Coordinator"
Starting as an Office Administrator, Suzanne has quickly advanced through the ranks to become the Administrative team's most valued members. A strong professional, she held numerous positions at our Kenmount Road and Harding Road campuses including Registrar, Business Officer, and her current role as Apprenticeship Coordinator. As the original Apprenticeship Coordinator, Suzanne has turned this role into the most important at the Harding Road Campus. Working with her Apprenticeship Assistant, she provides information about employment opportunities to graduates and alumni, supervises Work Terms, and facilitates Journeyperson exams. She also arranges advanced training classes at both the St. John’s and Corner Brook campuses, Chairs the OHS Committee, and works closely with the Division of Industrial Training. In addition to her Office Administration program, Suzanne has a Certificate in Leadership. She is an active Canadian Diabetes Association advocate and Camp Douwanna supporter. James (Jim) Hedges - Harding Road Campus "Construction/Industrial Electrician Instructor"
During his two years at Academy Canada, Jim has progressed to senior Advanced Electrical teacher who trains returning students to do their Blocks 2-4 to prepare for their Journeyperson exams. He is proud to help several groups move through the system and ultimately achieve their Journeyperson status. After attending high school in his native USA, Jim spent five years with the US Air Force. During his service, he completed countless industrial automation, marine and commercial systems training programs, eventually achieving Journeyman Electrician status. Despite achieving this major certification, Jim has continued learning and training. He has done numerous post-Journeyperson courses, including Programmable Logic Control. Beyond his trade, Jim has completed American Sign Language, SCUBA diving, Industrial Equipment Operations, Welding, and Fibre Optics courses. Jim has built his career with a number of local Electrical companies, including Excel Electrical and Bayview Electrical. He is also an IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) member. Popular amongst his students, Jim has evolved into one of Academy Canada’s strongest instructors. We are proud to have him as our Staff and Instructor Profile! Anita Abbott - Harding Road Campus "Acting Principal"
While at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Anita was an active member of the university community. She even received the prestigious "MUN Volunteer of the Year" award for her Adult Literacy work. Upon graduation, Anita successfully taught Level One Adult Basic Education at the Rabbittown Learners Program. In October 2007, Anita joined Academy Canada Trades College as a Campus Student Support Coordinator. In this role, she provided fantastic assistance to student with special needs including learning and physical disabilities, unique circumstances and challenges. When the Vice Principal position became available, Anita was a natural selection for a promotion. Since becoming a Vice Principal, Anita assumed responsibility as a Senior Administrator at the College. She specifically manages all Human Resouces activities, including staff recruitment, training, and professional development. She works with the Principal to ensure the Harding Road Campus is run effectively, and students are being serviced as fully and professionally as possible. Anita's personal philosophy on education can be best summarized as: "Education is a learning process that does not just take people into the classroom, but into our everyday lives. No one is ever too young or old to learn, and I feel that we learn just as much from our students as they learn from us." |

Originally from St. John’s, Roger started teaching with Academy Canada on September 5, 2007. He currently teaches the nine month entry level program, reviews and updates curriculum, develops various teaching aids and evaluations, and is an active Campus Safety Committee member.
Melvin started teaching at Academy Canada in 2004 as an Entry Level Carpentry Instructor.
Frank Whiteway was born and raised in Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Faculty of Culinary Arts: Cook" Instructor, Todd Smith, joined Academy Canada Harding Road Campus in October 2007. Prior to joining the Academy Canada team, he worked at numerous restaurants such as the Fairmont.
Jennifer grew up in the town of Bonavista, and moved to St. John’s to attend Academy Canada.
Tracy graduated from Academy Canada’s Office Administration Technology (Medical, Dental, Legal, Engineering) program in March 2009.
Gayle Elliott grew up in the beautiful city of Corner Brook with her parents, 2 sisters and her puppy G.J. She enjoys music, singing, dancing, and long walks on the beach.
Paul joined the Academy Canada family in April 2008 as a Related Training Instructor.
Wayne started at Academy Canada as a Carpentry program student.
Melanie joined Academy Canada as a Campus Student Support Coordinator in May 2009. In this role, she provides support to students with learning disabilities and those at risk of not completing their program. She also prepares Individualized Delivery Plans, and monitors student attendance and performance.
Ken Evans is an instructor with character! Known for his sense of humor, commitment to students, high expectations and dedication to success, he is one of Academy Canada's most respected instructors.
Since starting with Academy Canada in 2005, Jody Rees has grown to become one of the College's most respected instructors. He has developed a very strong relationship with his students and taken great pride in watching them build successful careers.
Since starting with the College in 2001, Louis Hodder has progressed to our Lead Steamfitting/Pipefitting instructor. Besides teaching an occasional Entry Level group, Louis teaches all Advanced Block classes and does an outstanding job preparing apprentices to write their Journeyperson exam.
When you train the best, you want to hire them as well! Suzanne Jordan is such an example. After graduating from Academy Canada’s Office Administration program with a great academic performance and excellent attitude, the College was eager to hire this young rising star.
James (Jim) Hedges began instructing the Construction/Industrial Electrican program with Academy Canada in 2007 after a long and illustrious career.
Anita Abbott was born and raised in Bonavista, Newfoundland along with her younger sister, parents, and large extended family. After graduating from High School, she attended Memorial University of Newfoundland and completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree with an English Major, and Diploma in Adult Education.
