Program Description

Academy Canada’s Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) program is designed to provide students with the essential foundation of skills, knowledge and abilities required for computer-aided design, drafting and modeling in two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) project environments. These skills are in high demand, and will prepare graduates for rewarding careers in a wide range of industries, such as civil, construction, mechanical, and naval architectural fields.

Program Courses

In this program, students will become skilled in 2-D and 3-D computer-assisted drafting using AutoCAD, a leading industry-standard software application for computer-aided design and drafting used world-wide. The program begins with fundamental courses in design, drafting, sketching, technical mathematics and AutoCAD basics, then elevates to more advanced practical courses and applications, enabling students to create, capture and showcase their designs and newfound skills.

Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities for graduates of Academy Canada’s CAD program exist in industries where products or structures need to be created according to client specifications, such as in construction, mechanical, civil engineering or naval architectural firms. Graduates will be a vital part of multi-disciplinary teams when they enter industry, working under the supervision of designers or engineers to produce drawings, plans, diagrams or layouts through computer-assisted and conventional methods. In the field, graduates will convert ideas and concepts for new products and designs into accurate drawings that specify size, shape, materials and other details; these drawings will be used to lead successful manufacturing, consulting and construction of a desired product or structure.

Academy Canada graduates are employed by some of these excellent employers:

  • Genoa Design International
  • Avalon Controls
  • BAE-Newplan Group Ltd.
  • McElhanney
  • Newfoundland Power
  • Wood Group

Work Term Information

Work terms are a required, unpaid, formally arranged on-site training experience completed at the end of the program. The work term provides students with practical, real-world experience that supports skill development, professional confidence, and readiness for employment.

Students are expected to attend according to the host’s schedule and must report any absences to both the host supervisor and the Graduate Employment Coordinator. Missed days are added to the end of the placement. Attendance and performance are monitored through ongoing communication, including check-ins and formal mid-placement and final evaluations. Successful completion of an approved, authorized work term is required for graduation.

Students are responsible for maintaining professional conduct, attending as scheduled, complying with host policies, promptly reporting absences or concerns, and completing all required documentation. The College is responsible for approving placements, providing guidance and support, monitoring progress, and determining successful completion. Work term hosts are responsible for supervision, attendance reporting, providing appropriate learning opportunities, and completing required evaluations. Students who do not who do not meet work term requirements may be removed from their placement and may be required to complete a new placement in order to graduate.
