Laura Synyard's Article, "Never Say Never", Featured On NLCA Magazine

When Laura Synyard moved to Conception Bay South in 2007, she was suddenly unemployable.

She would dread going to interviews as one employer after another told her she was over-qualified and under-certified.

Her employment struggles would continue for the next two years until she took her husband&'s advice to return to college to pursue training in Occupational Health and Safety.

After graduating from Academy Canada in 2011 with an Occupational Health and Safety Diploma as well as being the President's Award winner, she became a Project Safety Advisor with Guildford's and MSM Construction at the Long Harbour site.

Laura's tireless commitment to Occupational Health and Safety awards including the 2013 Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association's "Award of Excellence" and 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association's "Community Leader Award" for her volunteer work.

According to Academy Canada Director and Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association Education and Training Chairperson, James Loder, "Laura breaks down stereotypes in one fell swoop." He also adds that "She is a female whom went into a predominantly male dominated occupation, she went back to school later in life, and she went back as a family person. All of those things are contrary to how you would envision a typical trades or construction oriented worker. It's incredibly brave to be able to do that."

Laura's top three tips for fellow journeypersons include don't expect to start at the top, never stop learning, and get involved with the community.

Academy Canada congratulates Laura Synyard on her success in the Occupational Health and Safety field. Keep up the great work!
